ATLANTA, Ga. (October 24, 2023) – Maryville’s sophomore forward Hannah Smoot and senior defender Hailey Cartt have been voted the 2023 CCS Offensive Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively, by the conference’s head coaches, announced today by the league office. Covenant’s graduate student goalkeeper Lucy Sandhoff was voted Goalkeeper of the Year, while Maryville’s freshman midfielder Madison McDonald was named Rookie of the Year and Maryville’s Pepe Fernandez was voted Coach of the Year.
CCS Offensive Player of the Year | Hannah Smoot, Maryville
Maryville's sophomore forward, Hannah Smoot, stands as a beacon of offensive prowess, earning the prestigious title of CCS Offensive Player of the Year. Her remarkable achievements include securing a First Team All-Conference selection. Hailing from Tennessee, Smoot ranks second among the Scots and fourth in the league in goals, with an impressive tally of nine, and stands as the league's third best for points with 24. With 31 shots on goal, she takes second place in the league. The sophomore forward's consistency shines as she played an average of 60 minutes over 17 games this season. Notably, Smoot played an instrumental role in guiding the Scots to the No. 1 seed and the CCS Regular Season Title, with a standout regular season record of 12-2-3 overall, and 7-0-1 in league play.
CCS Defensive Player of the Year | Hailey Cartt, Maryville
Cartt, the senior defender for Maryville, has risen to the top as the CCS Defensive Player of the Year. Her exceptional contributions extend to her inclusion in the First Team All-Conference selection. Leading a formidable defense, the Scots presently top the CCS in both fewest goals allowed (7) and fewest goals allowed per game (0.39). Notably, Cartt has recently added scoring power with one goal and five assists over her last five games.
CCS Goalkeeper of the Year | Lucy Sandhoff, Covenant
Sandhoff, the graduate student goalkeeper from Covenant, emerges as the CCS Goalkeeper of the Year, a testament to her impressive season-long performance. Sandhoff's outstanding stats include leading the conference with 72 saves and boasting an impressive save percentage of .847. She has secured five clean sheets across full 90-minute games and has not allowed a goal in the first half on four separate occasions. Notably, Sandhoff achieved a career milestone early in the season by breaking Covenant's career saves record, accumulating an impressive 375 saves over her career. Her standout performance was recognized with the CCS Defensive Player of the Week award on September 19, following back-to-back clean sheets and an extraordinary nine-save display against Sewanee.
CCS Rookie of the Year | Madison McDonald, Maryville
Maryville's Madison McDonald, a dynamic all-around player, secures the title of CCS Rookie of the Year in her first season with the Scots. The freshman midfielder has showcased her prowess by contributing three goals and accumulating nine points. With an average of 60 minutes of play per game, this Alaska native has proven to be a valuable asset to the team.
CCS Coach of the Year | Pepe Fernandez, Maryville
Fernandez, the esteemed leader of the Maryville soccer programs, claims the title of CCS Coach of the Year for the 2023 season. Under his expert guidance, the Scots achieved an impressive 7-0-1 record in league play, securing the CCS Regular Season title. Notably, eight of his student-athletes were honored with all-conference distinctions, with special recognition for Smoot, Cartt, and McDonald, who each received prestigious awards from the league this fall. As the Scots prepare for the CCS Championship, they eagerly anticipate hosting the winner of the Agnes Scott-Wesleyan game on Saturday night.

ABOUT THE COLLEGIATE CONFERENCE OF THE SOUTH
The CCS is an NCAA Division III athletic conference that began play during the 2022-23 academic year. The conference features nine member institutions (Agnes Scott College, Berea College, Belhaven University, Covenant College, Huntingdon College, LaGrange College, Maryville College, Piedmont University, and Wesleyan College) and sponsors championships across 14 sports. In addition to sharing the member institutions' geographic identity, the name 'Collegiate Conference of the South' is indicative of a shared commitment to academic excellence, which is commensurate with the NCAA Division III philosophy.
