Next Chapter Friday Feature: Morgan Head, Asbury University Graduate

For Morgan Head, stepping off the basketball court for the final time in 2025 marked more than just the end of a season, it marked the close of a defining chapter.

A well known student-athlete at Asbury University, Morgan majored in Business Administration and Spanish while dedicating herself to the game she loved. But as she transitioned from college life into adulthood, she quickly learned that saying goodbye to sports was just one of many changes coming her way.

When asked about her transition after her collegiate sports career ended, she replied: “After sports ended for me, so did so many other things in my life that I was connected to through sports,” Morgan reflected. “That was a bit difficult, but I didn’t really have time to sit with that transition.”

Within just a few months of playing her final game, Morgan graduated, moved to a new city, began a new job, and got married. After graduation, she moved to Louisville and stepped into the call of full-time ministry. She now works at Southeast Christian Church in the Missions Ministry and loves everything about what she gets to do every day.

“I work with our local, national, and international ministry partners, while also building resources to get the people of our church involved in serving in our community,” she shared. “Each day in ministry is different, but the Lord is so present in each moment, and it is a sweet gift to serve His kingdom through the local church.”

Morgan’s dream is to continue in full-time ministry and go wherever the Lord calls her, whether that’s staying in Louisville or serving across the world. Adding to the whirlwind of change, Morgan also got married just a few months after graduation. She and her husband both attended Asbury, graduated together, and now work at Southeast Christian Church.

“It has been the best season of growth, change, new experiences, and the Lord's blessings after college!” she said.

When asked what skills she gained from juggling being a student-athlete and how she implements those skills today, she replied:

Through years of balancing academics and athletics, Morgan developed tools that now anchor her adult life.

“Being a student-athlete taught me the importance of taking care of my body mentally, physically, and emotionally,” she explained. Daily habits: exercise, proper nutrition, and intentional rest weren’t just about game-day performance anymore; they became cornerstone of her well-being.

Perhaps more importantly, Morgan carried forward a mindset rooted in discipline and excellence.

“Just like sports, if you want to grow in something, you have to be disciplined,” she said. Whether it’s getting up early to read her Bible and pray, showing up to meetings prepared and on time, or going the extra mile for a coworker, the routines she practiced on the court now fuel her drive in the workplace and in her personal life.

To current student-athletes preparing for their own transition, Morgan offers heartfelt advice: don’t let your sport define you entirely.

“Sports are just a part of who you are, not your entire identity,” she emphasized. “There will be a day when you are no longer a competitive player, and you’ll have to ask yourself, ‘What now?’ If your entire identity is rooted in being a basketball player, that question becomes really hard to answer.”

Her encouragement? Start separating who you are from what you do while you're still playing. That way, when the time comes to hang up your jersey, you'll not only look back fondly on the memories, but look forward with hope.

“With the right mindset, you’ll realize that the best is still yet to come.”

While her post-college life took off at full speed, the absence of her basketball “family” was still felt.

“Sports always gives you a community to do life with, and it is a weird feeling when that community is no longer there every single day,” she said. Yet, as she adjusted to her new rhythm, Morgan found strength in what basketball had instilled in her.

“If you understand that you are more than your sport while you're still playing, you will remember that you are still more than your sport when you hang up your jersey for the last time,” she said.
