NEWBERG, Ore. --- The Asbury men's basketball team (1-10, 0-0 CCS) earned a triple-overtime victory against George Fox University (1-8, 0-1 NWC) on Friday night in Newberg, Ore., 123-117.
Asbury made a school-record 22 three-pointers in the game to secure the win in their final matchup of a West Coast trip. Junior finance major Jonathan Combs scored a career-high 31 points with 10 rebounds for a double-double, including five made threes.
George Fox led by two points at the half, 46-44, and were then outscored by two points in the second (36-34) to conclude regulation tied, 80-80. The two teams tied over the next two overtime periods, scoring 11 and then 17 points apiece, and began the third overtime at 108-108.
The Eagles trailed 106-99 with 1:04 to go in the second overtime, before a comeback that was capped by Isaiah Stephan's three with 13 seconds to go, tying the game at 108 and sending it into another overtime. Asbury outscored George Fox in the third overtime 15-9 to take the 123-117 win.
Cam Jones and Indred Whitaker joined Combs in making five threes apiece, the three players tallying 15 of the 22 Asbury threes. AU went 22-45 from distance and 41-90 from the field, their best offensive game of the season.
Junior biology major Scott Shepherd had a career-high eight assists, also grabbing eight rebounds and scoring nine points. Asbury had 10 players score five points or more in the game.
The Eagles also had a season-high 29 assists, topping their previous season-high by 13 assists.
