Volleyball Earns Season Sweep of Asbury

WILMORE, Ky. -- Covenant volleyball earned the season sweep of Asbury on Friday evening, sweeping the Eagles at the Luce Center, 3-0.

Back-to-back CCS Player of the Week Aubrianna Gerdes kept up her recent hot streak with 15 kills to lead the Scots (18-2, 9-0 CCS), while Cali Sandhoff had 17 assists and reigning CCS Defensive Player of the Week Henley Gentry posted 23 digs.

In the first set, Covenant used a late 6-1 stretch to gain some breathing room, thanks to a pair of kills and an ace from Gerdes. That 23-17 lead was then tested by a hungry Asbury team, looking to avenge their defeat in Barnes PE Center in September, as they closed the gap to 24-23. However, an attack error from the Eagles (10-9, 3-4 CCS) gave set one to the Scots, 25-23.

The opening of the second set saw Covenant open with a 9-2 stretch, highlighted by four more kills from Gerdes, to go up 9-5. Once again though, Asbury kept on swinging, and the teams traded points up until the final stretch, which had Asbury one point away from taking a set with a 24-23 lead.

The Scots then did some swinging of their own.

Gabby Sumrall and Avery Maiden led off with back-to-back kills to go up 25-24, and following an Asbury tying point, Covenant got another set of back-to-back kills from Kennedy Barber and Cali Sandhoff to take the commanding 2-0 set advantage, 27-25.

The third set remained close early, as the Scots led by just one, 13-12, but, a subsequent 6-0 run, which included a kill and a block from Scarlett Martz, made it 19-12 in a blink. With the momentum fully on their side, Covenant shut the door by taking six of the final eight points to win the set, 25-16, and the match.

Julia Wright led Asbury with nine kills, while Sara Beth Gray added 16 assists and Isabelle VandeSchraaf 17 digs.
