Ayiei and Combs Shine; Help Lead Asbury Past Belhaven for Crucial CCS Win

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS

WILMORE, Ky. – Asbury University (6-17, 4-6 CCS) turned in one of its most complete performances of the season, pulling away in the second half for a 93-63 victory over Belhaven University (10-12, 4-5 CCS) on Thursday night inside the Luce Center.

After a competitive opening stretch, the Eagles began to find their rhythm midway through the first half, using efficient shooting and active defense to build a 40-30 halftime advantage. Asbury shot 48% from the floor in the opening half and limited Belhaven to just 35% shooting, setting the tone on both ends of the court.

AU elevated its play after the break, outscoring the Blazers 53-33 in the second half while shooting an impressive 63% from the field over the final 20 minutes. The Eagles finished the night at 56.5% overall shooting and knocked down 8-of-15 from three-point range (53.3%), repeatedly stretching the lead with timely perimeter looks and strong finishes in transition.

Jonathan Combs led all scorers with 24 points, connecting on 9-of-14 from the field and 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, while also adding four rebounds.

Jordan Lewis controlled the pace with 12 points, six assists, and five rebounds, consistently creating scoring opportunities for teammates.

Lual Ayiei delivered a dominant performance on the glass, recording a double-double with 11 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks.

The Eagles' depth was also on display as Indred Whitaker added 12 points, hitting 4-of-6 from three, and Cam Jones chipped in 10 points and four assists. Asbury finished with 18 assists on 35 made field goals, emphasizing ball movement, while committing just 11 turnovers on the night.

Defensively, the Eagles forced 15 Belhaven turnovers and converted them into scoring chances.

Belhaven was led by C.J. Minton's 16 points and Neal Terry's 15, but the Blazers were held to 30.1% shooting for the game and struggled to keep pace as Asbury continued to push the tempo and control the paint.
