LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant volleyball won the battle of the CCS unbeatens as they swept Asbury, 3-0, at Barnes PE Center on Wednesday evening.

Avery Maiden paced the team in kills once again with 13, hitting .313 in the process, while Cali Sandhoff had 17 assists and Henley Gentry posted 13 digs. Gabby Sumrall had four blocks, while Kennedy Barber added three, including a key solo block, to assist on defense

The Scots (10-1, 4-0 CCS) began the match in style, taking eight of the first ten points, getting two kills from Maiden and an ace from Hailey Landrum to open up an early advantage. 

The Eagles (6-4, 2-1 CCS) hung around though, using a late run to cut it to 18-16 Covenant. However, the Scots did not let them get any closer, getting a kill from Aubrianna Gerdes and an Asbury attack error to claim the set, 25-21. 

A similar story unfolded in the second set, as Covenant led 6-2 early, only to see the Eagles knot it up at 18 late. After a pair of Maiden kills helped spark a 3-0 run, the Scots appeared to be back in control, but Asbury dug deep and found a way to take a 25-24 lead.

Then Covenant dug deeper.

A kill from Gerdes tied the score, and then a fortunate bounce off the net gave Sandhoff an ace to take a 26-25 lead. Then, a bad set by Asbury clinched the second set, 26-24.

The Eagles came out swinging in the third set, leading 6-4 early on, but the Scots found their groove, outscoring them 15-6 over the next stretch to take a 19-12 lead, thanks to a pair of kills from Scarlett Martz.

Covenant cruised from there, scoring six of the next eight points to take the match in the third set, 25-15.

Isabelle VandeSchraaf led Asbury with 10 kills, while Sara Beth Gray had 16 assists and Aliah Jones blocked five attacks.

The Scots play twice on Homecoming this Saturday, once against Agnes Scott at 11 a.m. and then against Regent at 3 p.m.
