The History of The Collegiate Conference of the South

In November 2021, a pivotal moment unfolded in the history of the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS). After thoughtful and amicable discussions, the nine member schools made a momentous decision—to pursue a separation from the USA South Conference, setting the stage for a new chapter in collegiate athletics.

By January 2022, this bold vision began to take shape as the CCS was officially incorporated in the state of Georgia. With determination and a clear sense of purpose, the conference submitted its application to the NCAA Membership Committee, aiming to establish itself as a new NCAA Division III Athletic Conference. Dr. Kurt Patberg, a respected figure in collegiate athletics, stepped forward to serve as the interim commissioner, lending his expertise to guide the fledgling conference through its critical early stages.

The efforts of the CCS leadership bore fruit quickly. In February 2022, the NCAA Division III Membership Committee approved the CCS's application for membership, marking a significant milestone. The conference announced its plans to begin official competition in the 2022-23 academic year, offering and sponsoring championships in 14 sports during its inaugural year—a testament to the ambition and commitment of its member institutions.

In The News

By July 2022, the CCS had established a digital presence with the launch of its official website (collegiateconferenceofthesouth.com) and the rollout of social media channels (@ccofsouth) on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. This digital outreach signaled the conference’s readiness to engage with a broader audience and solidified its place as the newest Division III conference.

In April of 2023, the CCS hired their first-ever full-time commissioner, Beth Vansant.
