WILMORE, Ky.--- The Asbury men's basketball team (2-4, 0-0 CCS) took a 77-76 overtime win over Wittenberg University (2-2, 0-0 NCAC) behind Ben McNew and Cam Jones combining for 47 points on Friday night in Wilmore, Ky.
McNew led all scorer's with a season-high 27 points, going 9-16 from the field with three three-pointer's, three rebounds, and two assists. Jones scored a career-high 20 points for Asbury, going 7-12 from the field and 4-7 from deep.
AU led 37-33 at the end of the first half and Wittenberg won the second half 34-30, sending the game into overtime at 67-67. Asbury scored 10 points in the five-minute overtime and held Wittenberg to nine points, earning the 77-76 victory in their first ever matchup with Wittenberg.
Graduate student Clayton Winter grabbed seven rebounds with four assists and nine points. Sophomore biology major Scott Shepherd had a career-high 10 rebounds.
AU held Wittenberg to only two second chance points, scoring five of their own. Wittenberg edged the rebounding battled 32-31.
Wittenberg committed six turnovers while AU committed nine giveaways. Both teams made 10 threes while Asbury outshot the Tigers from the field, 48.3% to 46.4%. AU made seven threes in the first half.
The Eagles went 9-20 from the line while Wittenberg went 14-25 from the stripe. Asbury had 28 points in the paint while Wittenbern scored 26 in the paint.
Looking ahead, Asbury will travel to Atlanta, Ga., on Tuesday night for a 6 pm tip-off against Oglethorpe University.
"The timing of this win was so good. We've had a couple hard losses, and this was good for us to stay focused. This was a really good Wittenberg team we played tonight. I'm very proud of our guys."
