Muncie and Sparks Lead Eagles Past Covenant, 3-1; Into CCS Semifinals

STORY - THE ESSENTIALS
LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga.--- The Asbury women's soccer team (10-6-3, 4-3-1 CCS) was led by senior biology major Hannah Muncie and junior biology major Anna Sparks in a 3-1 win over Covenant College (6-9-2, 5-2-1 CCS) on Saturday afternoon, in Lookout Mountain, Ga., to advance to the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) semifinals on Tuesday. 

Covenant struck first in the 15th minute, but AU responded before halftime when Muncie converted a penalty kick to even the score 1-1 going into halftime. 

The Eagles carried their momentum into the second half as Muncie scored again in the 49th minute off an assist from Sparks. Less than 10 minutes later, Sparks found the back of the net to extend AU's lead to 3-1.

Asbury's goalkeeper Peyton Steiniger anchored the Eagles defensively with nine saves, helping AU withstand a 20-9 shot disadvantage and 11-5 in shots on goal. 

Three yellow cards were given, two to Asbury, and one to Covenant.

Muncie's goal's marked her 13th of the season, leading both the team and the CCS. Sparks' assist was her eighth on the year, also leading the CCS and the team.
