Imfeld, Winter, and Hall Combine for 57 to Lead Asbury Past Covenant in CCS Quarterfinals

WILMORE, Ky.--- Asbury men's basketball (8-17, 4-8 CCS) graduate student Clayton Winter grabbed 20 rebounds alongside 16 points on Thursday night at the Luce Center in Wilmore, Ky., as the Eagles took a 92-69 over Covenant College (8-15, 3-8 CCS) to close the regular season.

Winter and his senior teammate Ben McNew were honored pregame for both reaching the 1,000 Career Points Club at Asbury. Winter, a Wilmore, Ky., native went 8-14 from the field with two steals in his sixth double-double to reach 992 career rebounds at AU. McNew, a senior sport management major from Nicholasville, Ky., had eight points with four rebounds on the night. 

AU shot 56% from the field in the first half with four threes to score an impressive 49 first half points. The Eagles held Covenant to 34 points in the first half and then outscored the Scots 43-35 in the second half, scoring their second most points in a game this season behind their 99 points at Covenant. 

Sophomore pre-medicine major Scott Shepherd was almost perfect from the field, going 8-9 for 21 points and grabbed five rebounds. Sophomore Asbury guards Luke Imfeld and Cam Jones combined for 14 rebounds and 12 assists, going for seven rebounds each and six assists apiece. 

Jonathan Combs went 4-6 from the floor for 12 points along with two rebounds and two assists for AU. Combs has now scored in the double-digits 11 times this season. 

The Eagles used 21 second chance points and 19 points off turnovers in the victory. AU outrebounded Covenant 47-32, while both teams combined for 31 turnovers (Covenant with 16 giveaways).

Asbury tied their second-most assists in a game this season, assisting 20 made shots. The Eagles scored 50 points in the paint and held the Scots to 26 paint points. 

The AU defense held Covenant to their lowest opponent field goal percentage this season at 31% from the field. Asbury also earned nine steals, tying their second-most this year. 

The Eagles move to fourth place in the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) with their second win of the year over Covenant.
