Piedmont Men Pull Off Semifinal Stunner; Finals Set at CCS Tennis Championships

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (April 25, 2025) - Day 2 of the 2024 CCS Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships saw the top seeds hold firm as both No. 1 Asbury (men) and No. 1 Piedmont (women) advanced to their respective finals with dominant 4-0 victories. On the men’s side, No. 3 Piedmont upset No. 2 Covenant 4-1 behind strong doubles play and clutch singles performances, setting up a title match against the unbeaten Eagles of Asbury. In the women’s bracket, No. 2 Asbury rolled past Huntingdon 4-0 to earn a spot in the championship, where they’ll face defending champion Piedmont in a much-anticipated showdown.

Match 3: No. 2 Covenant, 1 v. Piedmont, 4

Piedmont men’s tennis powered its way to the championship match with a hard-fought 4-1 win over second-seeded Covenant. The Lions claimed both doubles points to set the tone early, with the No. 3 pair of Mark Backeberg and Rohan Kavali rolling to a 6-1 win and the No. 2 duo of Charles Parnell and Connor Phelps closing out a competitive 6-4 victory. In singles play, Bryce VanOrder delivered a strong performance at No. 3 with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 win, while Parnell outlasted his opponent at No. 2 in a three-set battle, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Backeberg sealed the match at No. 4, coming from behind before his opponent retired midway through the third set. Piedmont advances to face top-seeded Asbury in the title match.
 
Match 4: No. 1 Asbury, 4 v. Belhaven, 0

Top-seeded Asbury showed why they earned the No. 1 spot with a dominant 4-0 sweep over Belhaven. The Eagles took early control with efficient doubles wins at No. 3 and No. 1, led by Alejandro Caceres and Gregorio Bustingorri’s 6-2 win. In singles, Asbury showcased its depth as Ben Moore (No. 3), Ignacio Ardiles (No. 4), and Andres Caceres (No. 5) all posted commanding straight-set victories to clinch the match. Asbury will face No. 3 Piedmont in Saturday’s championship bout.
 
 Women's Tennis
 
Match 3: No. 2 Asbury, 4 v. Huntingdon, 0

The second-seeded Asbury Eagles advanced to the championship round with a commanding 4-0 victory over Huntingdon. Megan Moore opened the scoring at No. 4 with a clinical 6-0, 6-1 win, followed by Martina Paillet’s efficient 6-1, 6-1 performance at No. 3. Katherine Nova sealed the deal with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win at the top of the lineup. In doubles, the tandems of Nova/Watkins and Moore/Kawata gave the Eagles early momentum with straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Asbury now sets its sights on the championship clash against top-seeded Piedmont.
 
Match 4: No. 1 Piedmont, 4 v. Maryville, 0

Top-seeded Piedmont was in control from start to finish as the Lions secured a 4-0 victory over Maryville to punch their ticket to the finals. In doubles, the No. 3 team of Alyssa McSpadden and Sarah Sanabia dominated 6-1, while Bri Laidman and Dannie Evans clinched the doubles point with a tight 6-4 win at No. 2. In singles, Caroline Morrison set the tone with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3, followed by straight-set wins from McSpadden (No. 1) and Laidman (No. 2) to wrap up the match. Piedmont will face No. 2 Asbury in the championship showdown.

The CCS is an NCAA Division III athletic conference that began play during the 2022-23 academic year. The conference features nine member institutions (Agnes Scott College, Asbury University, Belhaven University, Covenant College, Huntingdon College, LaGrange College, Maryville College, Piedmont University, and Wesleyan College) and sponsors championships across 14 sports. In addition to sharing the member institutions' geographic identity, the name 'Collegiate Conference of the South' is indicative of a shared commitment to academic excellence, which is commensurate with the NCAA Division III philosophy.
