COLUMBUS, Miss. — The Belhaven Women's Volleyball team earned its second win of the season in a five-set win over Mississippi University for Women on Tuesday night, winning 3-2 (25-20, 25-27, 25-21, 21-25, 15-10).
Belhaven started strong, building an early six-point lead before MUW trimmed the deficit to 16-15. The Blazers went on a 5-0 run before MUW closed the gap to 21-18. The Blazers closed out the set scoring four of the final six points to secure the first set. Corinne Cason had four of her career-best 14 kills in the opening set.
After trailing 0-2, Belhaven rattled off six consecutive points and controlled the early part of the set until MUW surged late. The Owls erased a 21-18 deficit with four consecutive points until they pulled away in the second set 25-27.
Much like the second set, the Blazers fell behind early, but roared back behind their attack, scoring eight of their first nine points on kills. Holding a 20-18 lead, Belhaven responded out of a timeout with consecutive points, then capitalized on three errors to take the set and reclaim the match lead.
MUW used a 6-0 run midway through the set to swing momentum, tying the match at 16. The Owls surged again scoring five of the final seven points to force a decisive fifth set.
The Blazers came into the final set hot, securing a 3-1 lead behind kills from Megan LaCour and Rylee White. After a back-and-forth stretch that saw both teams tied at 10, the Blazers scored the final five points of the match, which included two aces from Miriam Ateca.
LaCour tallied 17 kills and 18 digs for her second double-double of the season. Cason notched a career-best 14 kills on a .214 hitting percentage. Ateca finished with 21 assists, while Kayla Robinson anchored the defense with 22 digs.
Next up for the Blazers is a cross-town trip on Friday where Belhaven will face rival Millsaps College. The match is set to begin at 6:00 PM.
