MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The difference came down to grit and determination - both of which the Scots displayed in their first victory of the year.

Senior Hannah Smoot scored in the 85th minute to give the Scots the late lead and ultimately the victory. The loan goal of the game was assisted by junior Anne Marie Konieczny on a breakaway run to the goal where she lead Smoot to the perfect position to score the ball into the lower right corner of the goal - just out of reach of the Spalding goalkeeper.

After a scoreless first half, the Scots and Golden Eagles continued to battle evenly through much of the second frame. Both teams traded chances, with Maryville goalkeeper Trinity Atkinson turning away four Spalding shots to keep the match level. Smoot led all players with four shots, three of which were on-target.
Spalding created opportunities with nine total shots and seven corner kicks, but the Maryville defense held firm. Atkinson's clutch saves and timely clearances, along with the stout defensive effort of the Maryville defenders, preserved the clean sheet
Maryville improves to 1-1-0 on the season, while Spalding falls to 0-2-0.
The Scots return to action next Friday and Saturday for the Maryville College Fall Classic, hosting Rhodes, John Carroll, and Covenant. MC will face John Carroll on Friday at 5:30 PM, and then will play Rhodes the following day at 3:30 PM.
