DECATUR, Ga. - The Agnes Scott tennis team continued to get it done when it mattered most, and got contributions throughout the lineup, as they picked up a crucial win in Collegiate Conference of the South play today. The Scotties used their depth and exceptional doubles play to take down LaGrange (6-5, 0-2 CCS), 4-3. With the win, the Scotties (3-4, 1-1 CCS) took a big step toward qualifying for the end of the season conference tournament. Agnes Scott and LaGrange were picked 6th and 7th, respectively, in the preseason poll. Six teams qualify for the postseason.
In doubles play, Agnes Scott raced to big leads at all three spots, with the sophomore duo of Taylor Hendley and Feliz Pearson playing their best match of the season, racing past Michaela Krajcovicova and Abigail Fuller, 6-2, at the #2 spot. Shortly after, Jasmine Ziller and Sohia Dumitru-Rose clinched the doubles point for the Scotties, winning by a score of 6-3 at #3. At the top spot, Kennadi Reese and Katherine Cox jumped out to an early 4-1 lead over sisters Kayla and Karla Wiley. The LaGrange duo fought back and ended up taking the final five games, downing the Agnes Scott duo, 6-4, in the closest contest of the doubles.
The Scottie depth paid off big in singles, as they ran to quick wins at positions 4 through 6 to quickly put the match out of reach for the Panthers. Feliz Pearson dropped only one game at the #4 spot, and Jasmine Ziller quickly followed with a win at the #6 spot over Fuller, 6-2, 6-1. LaGrange rebounded with wins at #1 and #3, as the Wiley sisters completed their impressive day for the visitors. However, Sophia Dumitru-Rose picked up her second clinching singles match of the season, as she took out Aireona WIlliams, 6-1, 6-3 at the #5 spot. The closest match of the day was a back and forth affair at the #2 spot. Agnes Scott's Taylor Hendley came up just short against LaGrange's Krajcovicova, dropping a three-setter, 3-6. 6-4, 1-0(6).
The Scotties celebrated senior Katherine Cox prior to the match. The lone senior on the squad, Cox has been a mainstay in the Agnes Scott lineup throughout the past four years. She is a leader on the court as well as in the classroom and has been a key ingredient to the team's improvement over the last few seasons.
The Scotties will return to the court, at home, on Wednesday, as they host another important match in CCS play, hosting Covenant (4-8, 0-0 CCS), who have yet to play a conference match this season. First serve is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the Agnes Scott campus.
