Beyond Tape and Ice: The True Impact of Athletic Trainers

ATLANTA, Ga. (March 31, 2026) - In honor of National Athletic Training Month and Women’s History Month, the Collegiate Conference of the South is highlighting  Jenny Massey, who serves as Director of Athletic Training, Senior Woman Administrator, and Deputy Title IX Coordinator at Maryville College.

Through her leadership, compassion, and expertise, she plays a vital role in shaping the student-athlete experience.

For Massey, the most rewarding aspect of Athletic Training is “Supporting student athletes in every part of their journey and getting athletes back to their sport as quickly and safely as possible while cultivating strong relationships.” She emphasizes the importance of being present throughout their entire journey, both on and off the field.

Massey is quick to challenge a common misunderstanding about her profession. “Many people think ATs only give out ice bags and tape ankles, when in reality we do so much more,” said Massey.“We are highly educated health care professionals that are trained to handle injuries from the beginning all the way through the rehab process.”

A cornerstone of Massey’s work is fostering trust. She ensures that student-athletes know they have a safe, supportive space where they can be heard without judgment. While making sure the Scots have  coverage at all home events, she goes the extra mile by being transparent  about her own mental health challenges which helps normalize conversations and provides athletes with a relatable and reliable source of support.

To young women interested in Athletic Training or sports administration, Massey offers both honesty and encouragement. “While being a female in sports isn’t always easy or glamorous, it is very worth it. The opportunity to lead athletes during an important part of their lives can be life changing, for them as well as yourself.” She acknowledges that working in sports can be challenging, but stresses that the rewards far outweigh the difficulties. What keeps Massey motivated through the demands of her roles is simple yet powerful: relationships and impact. Knowing she can positively influence student-athletes’ well-being and future outcomes gives her the drive to persevere, even on the toughest days.

The Collegiate Conference of the South extends its sincere gratitude to Jenny Massey and all athletic trainers around the CCS  for their unwavering dedication to student-athlete health, safety, and well-being. Their commitment to excellence, leadership in Athletic Training, and advocacy for inclusive and supportive environments continue to elevate both our institutions and  the conference as a whole.
