LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant baseball's offense broke through for nine runs and 13 hits to upend No. 11/17 Belhaven, 9-7, at the Covenant Baseball Field on Saturday afternoon.
Roby McClarnon went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Jonathan Ponder added a three-hit day and three runs scored to lead the Scots' (11-17, 4-8 CCS) offense, while Zach Barrett (2-1) earned the win in relief with two solid innings.
The offense got going in the first inning, as McClarnon was hit by a pitch and advanced two bases on a wild pitch before Daniel Counts brought him home on a sacrifice fly.
In the third, Covenant added two more on a Counts RBI hit-by-pitch and a Drew Avant RBI groundout. The Blazers (20-8, 5-4 CCS) countered with four runs between the fourth and fifth innings, though, to take a 4-3 lead.
Daniel Bell had other plans, as his two-out ground-rule double to left center tied it up at four, and then McClarnon doubled in Ponder in the sixth and later scored on a passed ball to give the Scots a 6-4 advantage.
Jake Schock then entered in the seventh and retired the side in order, but Belhaven would manufacture a run in the eighth on an RBI single before Schock induced a flyout to end the inning still in front.
In the bottom of the eighth, McClarnon concluded his day at the plate with an RBI triple, bringing home Ponder again, to make it 7-5, and then Sam Cecil singled in McClarnon to extend the lead further, before senior Jack Greene notched his first collegiate hit and RBI with a single up the middle to push it to 9-5.
In the ninth, things got tense as the Blazers homered and doubled to score a pair of runs before loading the bases with two out. Then, Brady Daniell rose up again, firing a perfect fastball to the outer half to retire Blake McCarthy looking and end the game.
JD Weed paced Belhaven with two hits, while Austin Canale had two RBIs on the day. Hayden Roberts (1-1) got the loss in relief.
