Week 1: CCS Men’s Tennis Players of the Week

ATLANTA, Ga. (February 14, 2024) - Bryce VanOrder (Piedmont) was Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, while Mark Backeberg (Piedmont) earned this week’s Men’s Tennis Rookie of the Week, released by the league office on Wednesday.
 
The duo, Camden Lashley (Covenant) and Caleb Domkowski (Covenant) was named Men’s Doubles Team of the Week.
 
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Bryce VanOrder, Piedmont
Senior  |  Cartersville, Ga.
 
Bryce VanOrder led the Lions to open the season 2-1, with wins over Greenville and Transylvania. Against Greenville, Bryce VanOrder won his singles match in the No. 2 slot, then joined with Michael Porcelli to earn an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles. He followed up and clinched the match against the Pioneers earning a third set tiebreaker 10-7 to seal the win. The senior was undefeated in doubles and singles play on Saturday before dropping a match to Ohio Northern on Sunday.
 
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Mark Backeberg, Piedmont
Freshman  |  Cape Town, South Africa
 
Backenberg had an outstanding opening weekend with the Lions. The freshman was a perfect 3-0 in singles action this weekend, winning on Sunday in his first try at No. 2 singles.
 
DOUBLES TEAM OF THE WEEK – Camden Lashley and Caleb Domkowski, Covenant
Senior & Freshman | Macon, Ga. & Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.
 
In the No. 3 doubles match, Camden and Caleb teamed up for an 8-2 win against Johnson. Covenant won the match 9-0.

The CCS is an NCAA Division III athletic conference that began play during the 2022-23 academic year. The conference features nine member institutions (Agnes Scott College, Berea College, Belhaven University, Covenant College, Huntingdon College, LaGrange College, Maryville College, Piedmont University, and Wesleyan College) and sponsors championships across 14 sports. In addition to sharing the member institutions' geographic identity, the name 'Collegiate Conference of the South' is indicative of a shared commitment to academic excellence, which is commensurate with the NCAA Division III philosophy.
