Edwards, Hailey Lead Blazers to 73-59 Win at MUW

COLUMBUS, Miss. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team continued their strong start to the season Wednesday night with a 73-59 road win at MUW. After a tight opening quarter, the Blazers used key second and third quarter stretches to take control and wrap up the road win.

Belhaven (7-1) finished the night with a 40-14 advantage in points in the paint and a +23 edge on the glass. Savannah Hailey anchored the interior with a season-high 15 rebounds, while Kamren Edwards delivered a career night off the bench with 18 points on efficient shooting. Veronica Williams added another steady performance from the perimeter with 13 points, knocking down multiple three-pointers for the fifth consecutive game.

First Quarter

The game opened at a slow pace, with both teams trading empty possessions early. Hailey set the tone on the glass, collecting multiple offensive rebounds that led to second-chance looks. After the score was briefly tied at 5-5, Belhaven put together a 9-0 run with baskets from Hailey and Ny Jones, capped by a fast-break layup to go up 14-5. MUW answered with a late run of their own, trimming the margin to two in the final minute and Belhaven held on to a 14-12 lead after one.

Second Quarter

The Blazers found their rhythm in the second. Kamren Edwards sparked the offense early with a jumper, then continued to attack the rim as Belhaven began to stretch the lead. Williams connected on a three midway through the quarter, and moments later added another from deep to give the Blazers their first double-digit advantage at 34-24. Belhaven closed the half on a strong note behind defensive rebounds from Hailey and timely buckets from Jones and Williams, taking a 36-27 lead into the break.

Third Quarter

Belhaven came out of halftime with purpose and delivered one of the key stretches of the game. Edwards scored twice in the first two minutes, including a jumper and a finish inside, pushing the lead to double-figures. The Blazers followed with a 9-2 run highlighted by a pair of paint scores from Kyla Farmer. Hailey continued to control the boards on both ends, limiting second chances and allowing Belhaven to play downhill. The Blazers outscored MUW 20-13 in the quarter and entered the fourth ahead 56-40.

Fourth Quarter

MUW made a push early in the fourth, cutting the margin to single digits, but Belhaven responded with poise. Edwards answered with a layup and then a transition finish to re-establish control. Williams followed by stepping into another three, keeping the Blazers comfortably in front.

Down the stretch, Belhaven leaned on its rebounding and free throws. Hailey secured several key defensive boards and Edwards capped her career night with a late basket in the final minute to seal the 73-59 win.

The Blazers are set for a quick turnaround, opening up conference play on the road at Asbury on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 1:00 PM.
