PENFIELD, N.Y. - Piedmont men's golf made a valiant charge up the leaderboard in Wednesday's second round of the NCAA DIII Championship but was unable to move up enough to advance to the third and fourth rounds.
The Lions made the third biggest leap of any team in the field in the second round, charging up 12 spots and into a tie for 28th. Unfortunately, only the top 18 teams advance to the next two days.
Playing their second round at Midvale Country Club, the Lions improved their team score by 10 strokes over Tuesday's first round, which they played at Cobblestone Creek Country Club.
Four of the five Lions improved their standing on the individual leaderboard on Wednesday.
Doug Gugel and Adam Rogers improved the most, vaulting 70 and 72 spots, respectively, as both posted rounds of 2-over 74.
Rogers made a team-high three birdies on his round to jump up to a tie for 63rd.
Gugel finished his round in strong fashion, making birdie on back-to-back holes coming down the stretch on holes 3 and 4 as he began his round on hole 7 in a shotgun start.
After leading the Lions with a 4-over 76 on Tuesday, Jacob DeJesus matched that score on Wednesday to lead the Lions at T-56th after the completion of two rounds.
Connor Lane produced Piedmont's final counting score with an 84 while Remo Scholl fired an 85 for the second consecutive day.
Illinois Wesleyan leads by two strokes at the halfway point while Bethel's Will Karkoc sits at 6-under to lead on the individual side by three.
This marks the conclusion of Piedmont's 2024-25 campaign.
