ATLANTA, GA. (November 6, 2026) - Meet Matthew Johnson — a passionate Asbury University graduate.
For Matthew Johnson, a 2023 Asbury University baseball alumnus, the end of his collegiate playing career was the beginning of a new journey in athletics. After graduating with a degree in Sport Management, Johnson remained connected to the game and now serves as Asbury University's Director of Athletic Communications and Events.
Although transitioning away from competition was challenging, Johnson found new ways to embrace the competitive mindset that shaped his student-athlete experience.
"The transition was tough for me. Growing up playing sports, you gain your competitive drive through it… and one day it's just all over!" Johnson shared.
His time as a student-athlete prepared him for more than life on the field. Through baseball, he developed skills in teamwork, time management, prioritization, and accountability that continue to influence his professional career.
Today, Johnson defines success differently. Rather than focusing on immediate results, he values long-term growth and the impact he can make within his athletics department, university, and professional community.
When asked what advice he would give current student-athletes, Johnson emphasized the importance of enjoying the moment while preparing for the future.
"Enjoy every moment and soak it in. You truly are living one of the best times of your life right now. But also, be prepared…the ball stops bouncing at some point for everyone."
From competing on the diamond to helping tell the stories of Asbury's student-athletes, Johnson's journey is a reminder that life after sports is not the end of your athletic journey, but the beginning of a new way to make an impact.
