Women’s History Month Spotlight: CCS Reflects on Historic Officiating Crew

ATLANTA, Ga. (March 27, 2026) - On November 22, CCS men’s basketball contest between Piedmont University and Sewanee, the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) witnessed a historic moment as an all-women officiating crew took the floor.

While the final score reflected the competition on the court, the significance of the night extended far beyond the game itself, highlighting the continued growth and presence of women in officiating at the collegiate level.

Moments like these represent more than a milestone – they reflect the evolving landscape of intercollegiate athletics and the individuals who contribute to the game in every capacity. From preparation and communication to leadership and decision-making, officiating plays a critical role in shaping the student-athlete experience.

The all-women crew served as a visible reminder of the opportunities and pathways available within the profession.

The crew for the contest included Elizabeth Glass, Sam Galloway, and Leshay Bernstein (pictured left to right), each bringing experience and professionalism to the court.

As part of Women’s History Month, the conference is taking time to reflect on moments that highlight the contributions of women across all areas of sport, including leadership, administration, and officiating.

“Moments like this are incredibly meaningful – not just for our conference, but for the future of our game. As someone who has spent my career in college athletics, it’s powerful to see women represented and leading in every space, including officiating,” said Beth Vansant, Commissioner of the CCS. “I’d like to thank Piedmont University for hosting this historic event and our men’s basketball official’s coordinator, Mick Fiondella, for his thoughtful representation of our league.”

This game serves as one example of the impact and visibility of women continuing to shape the future of athletics.

In recognition of Officials Appreciation Week (April 5-11), the CCS will share additional content, including behind-the-scenes features and interviews from the feature film "Rule of Thirds" presented by Crew Chief Entertainment, that further explores the individuals and preparation behind this historic moment.
