Gaines Throws No-Hitter As Hawks Sweep Covenant

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga.- Looking to bounce back from their double-header loss at Belhaven a week ago, Huntingdon Softball responded in a major way, sweeping a pair of matches with the Scots of Covenant College today, run-ruling their opponent in each. The Hawks claimed game one 9-1 before taking a 9-0 win in game two.

Sophomore pitcher Addison Gaines secured the first no-hitter of her career in the second game today, striking out 11 Scots to help the Hawks secure the sweep.

Game one

Huntingdon wasted no time setting the tone, erupting for three runs in the opening inning and never looking back in a run-rule victory on the road. The Hawks added another in the second before breaking things open with a four-run fourth to secure the sweep-opening win.

The offense was clicking top to bottom, finishing with 13 hits. Kate Dinkel led the way with a perfect 2-for-2 day and three RBIs, while Taylor Au scored three times and doubled twice. Riley Rudick added two hits and two RBIs, and Maddie Grace Hubbard and Kylie Stephens each recorded multi-hit performances as well.

In the circle, Allie Roberts earned the win, allowing just one run over three innings while striking out three. Madisyn Fruge closed it out with two scoreless innings to preserve the 9-1 final.

Game two

The Hawks struck first in the opening inning on a wild pitch before Kate Dinkel added an RBI single to give Huntingdon a quick 2-0 lead. After a steady middle stretch, the offense exploded in the fifth, putting the game away with a seven-run frame. The rally featured RBI hits from Lana GonzalesTaylor Au, and a two-run triple from Dinkel, along with aggressive baserunning and pressure that forced multiple Covenant miscues.

Offensively, Huntingdon collected 11 hits. Kate Dinkel again paced the lineup with a 2-for-4 day and three RBIs, while Taylor Au added two hits and two RBIs. Riley Rudick also chipped in a pair of hits, and Lana Gonzales drove in a run while scoring another.

The story of the game, however, was in the circle. Addison Gaines delivered a no-hitter, striking out 11 over five innings while allowing just one walk to completely shut down the Covenant lineup and seal the run-rule win.

The Hawks will look to keep rolling on Tuesday, April 14th against LaGrange at home. Games are set for 4:00 and 6:00 PM CT.
