Lions Roar! Piedmont Wins Inaugural CCS Women's Cross Country Championship

COMPLETE RESULTS

GRADY, Ala. – The Piedmont women's cross country team will forever hold the title of first CCS Champions as the Lions claimed the crown in the first postseason championship event in the new league. Jaycie Ponce claimed the individual title giving the Lady Lions three-straight individual winners as Val Angel went back-to-back in the spring and fall of 2021.

Ponce's time of 22:51.1 claimed the crown by over 10 seconds while putting her just two seconds off the program-best time Angel set in 2021 at the NCAA Championship.

"I was really excited to win the race, and I wasn't expecting to do as well as I did, considering it was such a challenging course," Ponce said. "It was definitely a little bit of an unpredictable course and time to run at, so with all of us doing so well, it was a great testiment to all the hard work we have been doing all season. This meet shows how strong we are, and since the region's course is flat and fast this year, I am excited to see how fast we can all run on a flat course that isn't as challenging as the one we competed on for conference."

Anna Gibson and Skyler Seeber posted top-five finishes as Gibson recorded a personal best in the 6k running a 25:04.5 while Seeber was hot on her heels with a 25:10.7.

"These women have continued to exceed expectations, race after race," Head Coach Jamie Jimison said. "This is a young and inexperienced team that raced like a bunch of seasoned veterans. The ladies came out today on a mission, and they fought over and over until they got to the line and reaped the benefits of a remarkable season and a remarkable race."

The team title marks the first team title for the Lady Lions since 2016 giving Coach Jimison his first cross country title during his time at Piedmont. The team title earned him CCS Coach of the Year honors.

With postseason underway, Piedmont will head to NCAA South Regionals on Saturday, November 12 in Newport News, Virginia.
