Covenant Splits Weekend Matches

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Covenant had a busy weekend on the court, playing four matches across two days. On Friday, the Scots fell to nationally-ranked opponents, No. 14 Berry and No. 2 East Texas Baptist, before responding on Saturday with two CCS wins over Piedmont and LaGrange. 

Game 1 Final: Covenant 0, No. 14 Berry 3

Covenant was outmatched in the first two sets, falling 25-11 and 25-12. In the third set, the Scots played to a higher standard, going toe-to-toe with the home team. With the score at 21-20 in Berry's favor, Berry racked off four of the next six points to earn the sweep. 

Kinsley Dupree led Covenant with six kills. 

Game 2 Final: Covenant 0, No. 2 East Texas Baptist 3

ETBU came into the match undefeated and proved its No. 2 ranking, sweeping Covenant 25-13, 25-16, 25-16. The Tigers had 41 kills on the day to Covenant's 22. 

For the second match in a row, Dupree led the Scots with six kills.

Game 3 Final: Covenant, 3, Piedmont 1

Covenant won the first two sets with ease at 25-16 and 25-13. However, in the third set Piedmont hung with Covenant and scored the important points late to win 25-22 and keep the match going. In set four, Covenant used an 8-2 run in the middle of the set to get a lead that it would never look back from. In the end, the Scots won 25-17 to clinch the match 3-1. 

The Scots shined offensively, posting 64 kills to the Lions' 35. 22 of the kills came from Delaney Stirm for a new career-high while Dupree had 11 and Scarlett Martz totaled 10. Defensively, Henley Gentry tallied a career-high 29 digs. 

Game 4 Final: Covenant 3, LaGrange 2

Covenant needed five sets to take down LaGrange in its final match of the weekend. The match went back-and-forth, including a 25-23 win for the Scots in set three. In the deciding set, Covenant went on an 8-1 run to ultimately decide the result in a 15-9 set five victory. 

Dupree tallied 13 kills for a new career-high in the win. Gabby Sumrall also had a career-high in kills with 10. Kennedy Barber posted a double-double for the Scots with 26 assists, 14 digs, and seven kills. 

Covenant now sits at 8-10 and 4-2 in CCS play on the year.
