Late Surge Sends Belhaven to Regional Final

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Belhaven Baseball team has booked their spot in the Webster Regional Final on Sunday following a late, come-from-behind win over the regional hosts.

The Blazers rallied late against Webster, the No. 13 ranked team in both the ABCA and D3baseball.com polls, plating eight runs in the final two frames to pick up the victory. The first two innings showcased the pitching prowess of both teams, with Colton Sylvester throwing up a pair of zeroes on the scoreboard for Belhaven.

Webster would take the lead in the 3rd on an unfortunate two-out, jammed hit that dropped just passed the infield dirt. The hosts would then threaten for more in the 4th with Belhaven opting to turn to freshman Lane Alack on the mound.

Alack would get out of a two on and nobody out jam, allowing just one of the inherited runners to score. Belhaven would scratch across their first run of the day in the top of the 6th as Tristan Pearson led off the inning with a double to right field before scoring on an RBI grounder by Blake McCarthy.

Lane Alack continued to keep Webster off the board and gave the Blazers a chance to rally late, a chance of which they took advantage. In the top of the 8th, Hunter Harrell picked up his third hit of the day with a one-out single that quickly turned into a bases loaded situation for Belhaven after Pearson was hit by a pitch and Nick Thornton singled to left field.

Blake McCarthy would work a hard-fought bases-loaded walk to plate the tying run and freshman Carter Hurley was called upon to pinch hit with the bases still loaded. Hurley was hit by a pitch which scored the go-ahead run and helped generate a five-run frame that flipped Belhaven's 2-1 deficit into a 6-2 lead.

The Blazers would tack on three more runs in the 9th with Austin Canale delivering an RBI double and Parker Ryan driving in a pair of runs on a base hit up the middle. Alack would continue his dominance on the mound in the final innings and slam the door shut in the 9th.

Key Performances

Tristan Pearson: 2-2, 2B, 2 BB, 3 R
Austin Canale: 1-3, 2B, 2 RBI
Hunter Harrell: 3-5, R

The Blazers now await the winner of Webster and MSOE to determine who they will face in the Regional Final. With the Blazers coming out the winner's bracket, Belhaven will have the advantage of needing to win just once to advance to the NCAA Super Regional Round. First pitch of Game One is set for 11:00 AM with an if necessary game at 2:30 PM.
