ATLANTA, Ga. (May 1, 2026) – Covenant’s Evangelia Berry earned Track Athlete of the Meet, while Maryville’s Abbey Cox was recognized as both Field Athlete of the Meet and Overall Athlete of the Meet for her dominant showing.
Belhaven’s Kimona Haynes was voted Athlete of the Year for the second time in her career, joined by teammate Brycelyn Townsend, who claimed Rookie of the Year honors after an impressive debut season. Maryville head coach Kunle Lawson was named Coach of the Year after leading the Scots to their first CCS Women’s Track & Field Championship.
Superlative awards were selected by a vote of the conference’s head coaches, while meet-specific honors were based on performances at the 2026 CCS Track & Field Championships.
Track Athlete of the Meet |
Evangelia Berry, Covenant
Evangelia Berry was the distance force of the championship meet, sweeping both long-distance events to stake her claim as the conference's top track performer. The Covenant standout captured individual titles in the 10,000m (39:57.77) and the 5,000m (18:50.66) and added a fourth-place finish in the 1,500m (4:54.45), rounding out a complete performance in the distance events. Berry also contributed to the Scots' fifth-place finish in the 4x400 relay. Her efforts across multiple events produced 25 points at the meet, earning her the Track Athlete of the Meet distinction.
Field Athlete of the Meet & Overall Athlete of the Meet |
Abbey Cox, Maryville
In just her second season with the Scots, Abbey Cox made a statement in the throwing events that earned her not one but two of the meet's top honors. Cox swept the field throwing events at the championship, claiming titles in the discus (36.49m) and the hammer throw (43.38m) while finishing third in the shot put (9.95m). The performance builds on an already impressive trajectory for Cox, who took home Rookie of the Year honors last season.
Athlete of the Year |
Kimona Haynes, Belhaven
A two-time recipient of the award, Kimona Haynes owns the conference's top times in the 100m (12.04, Southern Miss Invitational), the 200m (24.26, Belhaven Invitational) and the 400m (54.80, 2026 CCS Track & Field Championships), a trifecta that underscores her range as a sprinter. Beyond this season, the numbers behind her career tell their own story: Haynes holds the all-time CCS records for both First-Team All-Conference selections in a career (nine) and combined all-conference selections across a career (15) and was voted the 2026 CCS Athlete of the Year.
Rookie of the Year |
Brycelyn Townsend, Belhaven
Brycelyn Townsend arrived in the CCS and immediately made her presence known in the hurdle events, turning in a debut season worthy of the conference's top rookie honor. Townsend leads the league in the 100 hurdles with a personal-best time of 15.69 set at the Belhaven Invitational and earned an individual title in that event at the CCS Championship (15.92). She also ranks second in the conference in the 400 hurdles, where she clocked a 1:07.95 at the championship meet. Townsend capped her standout freshman campaign as part of Belhaven's first-place 4x400 relay team, which crossed the finish line in 4:12.90 at the 2026 CCS Track & Field Championship.
Coach of the Year |
Kunle Lawson, Maryville
Kunle Lawson guided the Maryville Scots to a first for the Scots' program — a CCS women's track and field championship title. Lawson's squad produced 19 podium finishes on the women's side during the conference championship. This championship marks a milestone moment for the Scots program, and Lawson's peers recognized his leadership with the conference's top coaching honor.
