Week 4: CCS Women’s Track and Field Athletes of the Week
ATLANTA, Ga. (April 8, 2025) – The Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) has announced its women’s track and field weekly honors, released by the league office on Tuesday.
 
Bailey Gassmann (Asbury) was named this week’s Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, alongside Abbey Cox (Maryville) who collected this week’s Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honor.
 
Mariah Thornton (Maryville) was also tabbed Women’s Track Rookie of the Week and Elie Berndt (Covenant) earned Women’s Field Rookie of the Week.
 

TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Bailey Gassmann, Asbury
Sophomore  |  Churchville, Pa.
 
Gassmann continued her standout season by rewriting the Asbury record books and dominating at the Centre Invite. Gassmann broke her own school record in the 1500-meter run, clocking a time of 4:52.31 to finish second in the event. She followed that up with a victory in the 800-meter run, crossing the line in 2:22.88. Gassmann capped off her day by anchoring the Eagles’ 4x400-meter relay with an impressive 61.5-second split to help the squad secure third place in the event.
 
FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Abbey Cox, Maryville
Freshman  |  Mosheim, Tenn.
 
Cox delivered a breakout performance at the Tornado Classic, setting a Maryville school record in the shot put with a mark of 11.17 meters to place second overall. Cox also added a third-place finish in the discus (35.43m) and took fourth in the hammer throw (39.28m), contributing valuable points across multiple events. Her efforts helped lead the Scots to a sixth-place team finish out of 11 competing schools.
 
TRACK ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Mariah Thornton, Maryville
Freshman  |  Newport, Tenn.
 
Thornton impressed in the hurdles at the Tornado Classic, setting a Maryville program record in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.20 seconds to finish seventh overall. She also competed in the 200-meter dash, placing 16th with a time of 29.75 seconds. Thornton’s performances helped the Scots tally 35 total points and tie for sixth place as a team.
 
FIELD ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Elie Berndt, Covenant
Freshman  |  Williamson, Ga.
 
Berndt showcased her versatility across three field events at the Emory Dooley Elite Invitational. She placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 21.33 meters, finished fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 9.63 meters, and took 14th in the long jump (4.06m).

ABOUT THE COLLEGIATE CONFERENCE OF THE SOUTH (CCS)
The CCS is an NCAA Division III athletic conference that began play during the 2022-23 academic year. The conference features nine member institutions (Agnes Scott College, Asbury University, Belhaven University, Covenant College, Huntingdon College, LaGrange College, Maryville College, Piedmont University, and Wesleyan College) and sponsors championships across 14 sports. In addition to sharing the member institutions' geographic identity, the name 'Collegiate Conference of the South' is indicative of a shared commitment to academic excellence, which is commensurate with the NCAA Division III philosophy.
