Week 6: CCS Men’s Tennis Players of the Week

ATLANTA, Ga. (March 17, 2026) - Mark Backeberg (Piedmont) was selected as the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, while Steven Fitzsimmons (Maryville) was Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) Men’s Tennis Rookie of the Week.
 
The duo Ben Onufrock and Caleb Domkowski (Covenant) were named Men’s Doubles Team of the Week.
 

PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Mark Backeberg, Piedmont

Mark Backeberg delivered a perfect week in both singles and doubles play, posting a combined 6–0 record to lead Piedmont’s efforts against a strong slate of opponents. Competing primarily at the No. 2 singles position, Backeberg earned straight-set victories over Wabash’s Ghidini (6–3, 6–4) and Roger Williams’ Carroll (6–3, 6–2), while also securing a win at the No. 1 spot against Carthage’s Silva (6–3, 6–4). In doubles play, Backeberg remained unbeaten across three lineup positions. He teamed with Rohan Kavali for victories at No. 3 and No. 2 doubles against Wabash and Carthage, respectively, before pairing with Leyton Dunn for a 6–1 win at the No. 1 spot against Roger Williams.
 
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Steven Fitzsimmons, Maryville

Steven Fitzsimmons put together an impressive week for Maryville, going undefeated in singles play while helping the Scots to a 2–1 team record. The freshman secured three singles victories across multiple lineup spots, including a 6–1, 6–1 win over Hastings’ Hafer at No. 3 singles.
Fitzsimmons followed with a hard-fought three-set victory against Asbury’s Murillo (7–5, 6–7, 1–0) and capped the week with a convincing 6–4, 6–0 win over Earlham’s Saha. In doubles play, he also picked up a victory at the No. 1 position alongside James Smith in a 6–3 win over Earlham.
 
DOUBLES TEAM OF THE WEEK – Ben Onufrock/Caleb Domkowski, Covenant
Senior/Junior | Woodstock, Ga. / Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.
 
Ben Onufrock and Caleb Domkowski turned in a dominant week in doubles competition, going a perfect 4–0 to help Covenant post a 3–1 team record. The duo recorded victories over Calvin, Anderson (Ind.), Case Western, and Moravian. Their performances included a pair of 6–2 wins over Calvin and Anderson, followed by 6–4 victories against Case Western and Moravian.

ABOUT THE COLLEGIATE CONFERENCE OF THE SOUTH (CCS)
The CCS is an NCAA Division III athletic conference that began play during the 2022-23 academic year. The conference features nine member institutions (Agnes Scott College, Asbury University, Belhaven University, Covenant College, Huntingdon College, LaGrange College, Maryville College, Piedmont University, and Wesleyan College) and sponsors championships across 14 sports. In addition to sharing the member institutions' geographic identity, the name 'Collegiate Conference of the South' is indicative of a shared commitment to academic excellence, which is commensurate with the NCAA Division III philosophy.
