Week 4: CCS Women’s Track and Field Athletes of the Week

ATLANTA, Ga. (March 26, 2024) – The Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) has announced its women’s track and field weekly honors, released by the league office on Tuesday.
 
Syniah Sims (Belhaven) was named this week’s Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, alongside Nakiyah Washington (Piedmont) who collected this week’s Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honor.
 
Zoe Harrison (Piedmont) was also tabbed Track Rookie of the Week and Jakia Joiner (Belhaven) earnedField Rookie of the Week.
 
TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Syniah Sims, Belhaven
Freshman  |  Atlanta, Ga.
 
Sims produced a stellar first place performance in the 200m run with a time of 24.58 seconds at the Belhaven Invitational. The freshman sprinter blazed her way to another program record in the 100 meter run with a time of 11.86 seconds. Sims also anchored the Blazers 4x100 squad to a new program record time of 47.87. The Georgia native currently ranks first in the region in the 200m dash.
 
FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Nakiyah Washington, Piedmont
Graduate Student  |  Adairsville, Ga.
 
Washington captured third place in the shot put with a throw of 11.20m at the Emory Thrills in the Hills meet. The Georgia native also took home a fifth place finish in the discus throw (33.19m). 
 
TRACK ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Zoe Harrison, Piedmont
Freshman  |  Mansfield, Texas.
 
Harrison finished in fourteenth place in the 200 meter dash at the Emory Thrills in the Hills meet. The Texas native currently ranks sixth in the conference in the 200 meter race.  
 
FIELD ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Jakia Joiner, Belhaven
Freshman  |  Utica, Miss.
 
Joiner secured a first place finish in the triple jump at the Belhaven Invitational (10.76m). The Mississippi native ranks first in the conference in the triple jump.

ABOUT THE COLLEGIATE CONFERENCE OF THE SOUTH
The CCS is an NCAA Division III athletic conference that began play during the 2022-23 academic year. The conference features nine member institutions (Agnes Scott College, Berea College, Belhaven University, Covenant College, Huntingdon College, LaGrange College, Maryville College, Piedmont University, and Wesleyan College) and sponsors championships across 14 sports. In addition to sharing the member institutions' geographic identity, the name 'Collegiate Conference of the South' is indicative of a shared commitment to academic excellence, which is commensurate with the NCAA Division III philosophy.
